Brief Summary of the Article:
The people of Sierra Leone want to revise the Constitution of Sierra Leone 1991. Paragraph (c) of section 41 which deals with the age limit on presidency; youths strongly believe the limit should be reduced from 40 to 35 years of age. Action Aid International Sierra Leone is campaigning for a revision of section 27(4)(d), they are deeply concerned about women's rights to own land; which they believe is contradictory to section 27(1). They say paragraph (d) of subsection 4 of section 27 enforces laws that discriminate against women's access to and control of land.
Thoughts, Comments, and/or Reaction:
A country's constitution is very important to the balance and success within the country. In the U.S. there is a well balance of men and women's rights and laws that enforce them. Other countries are still trying to find their balance with the people and their cultures. Many forms of government are still strict with "presidential" age and women's rights, as women are sometimes seen as the lesser gender. I am indifferent with the age change for presidency. Yet I am more for the revision of women's rights on land ownership.
Article's Relation to "Culture"
Women's rights towards land ownership have some cultural background in that
their are cultures where women aren't allowed much because of certain customary
beliefs. The age that people are allowed to run for president could also play a
role in culture. Cultures in Sierra Leone could believe that there is a certain
age limit to the amount of knowledge and maturity in order to play such a major
role. I feel any form of government plays into some cultural aspects.
