The Dominican Republic is the heart of winter baseball. Every city, town, and village has a field dedicated to playing the game. Ozzie Virgil was the first Dominican to play for a Major League baseball team in the United States and by the mid-50's,driven by the success of Juan Marichal and the three Alou brothers, Major League Baseball in the Dominican Republic had become internationally recognized as the home of Winter Baseball. There are now 5 pro teams, with each team playing a sixty game schedule that begins the end of October and runs to February. The
season ends in a round-robin play-off with the two finalist advancing to the Caribbean Series to play against the champions of Mexico, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico.

Although baseball is more popular in the U.S., the Dominican Republic is proud of its current pro teams. It is interesting to read about culture from other countries. It also goes to show that the U.S. culture isn't the one and only way to live.

Baseball plays a major role in Dominican Republic culture. Many young Dominican Republican children aspire to one day become a well-known baseball player on a pro team. On a typical Sunday after church services, young boys and teens go to the nearest ball field. As in the U.S. to watch Sunday football games, same goes for baseball in the Dominican Republican.
